Digital money. What is it?

We have come a long way and that is a fact.

Back in the day there were various forms of medium of exchange. Some used gold, livestock, wheat and many more. We moved to a time when people used notes and coins. This even though still the majority's medium of exchange a certain percentage  has taken to plastic money.

Everyday, as evident by the change in medium of exchange, something new comes up. We have heard here and there of bitcoins. Now we are hearing "Digital Money".

What is it? How different is it from Bitcoins?
