How do I downgrade from Lollipop to Kit Kat?

I have recently upgraded the OS of my phone from Kik Kat to Lollipop. From that day my battery is being drained rapidly and applications stop responding for no apparent reason. I have to reboot it several times a day and the phone usually gets hot when charging. What could be the problem? Is that what lollipop does? How may I solve this?

*Turns out the following might fix some issues, but the final solution is in the comment below this answer!

You may need to perform a factory reset, but remember, this will delete all the data on your phone. Backup all account information, contacts and files you want to keep.

Method 1 (easy, less chance of accidents):
Make sure your phone is charged before you begin.
From the Home Screen go to Menu and then to Settings.
Tap Backup & Reset and then Factory data reset.
Afterwards choose Reset device.
To confirm your choice select Erase everything.
The steps may have changed slightly in Lollipop but I'm sure you get the gist.

Method 2:
Make sure your phone is charged before you begin.
Turn off your mobile phone by holding down the Power button for a short while.
Afterwards, press and hold together the Volume Up + Home + Power buttons turn on the phone in recovery mode.
You can release the buttons once the phone starts and the Samsung Logo appears
Next, select from menu "wipe data / factory reset" using Volume buttons to navigate and Home button to confirm.
Select "Yes -- delete all user data" to confirm the whole operation.
After that select option "reboot system now".
Watch the process here https://youtu.be/g9KiZTNfjTY

After this your phone will be as new software wise, so you will need to redo any updates and security patches you may have done before.

The two methods you described will still load KitKat. Remember when you upgrade the phone, KitKat on the phone ROM is replaced with Lollipop. Therefore whatever you do, ie soft or hard reset (the above methods), you will still have lollipop because it is the OS on the phone (ROM). It's different with Windows when you upgrade from say Win 7 to 10 and decide later on you want to downgrade  Rather flash the phone, ie get you KK OS from "http://www.sammobile.com/firmwares/" and follow the instructions.
And yes you lose everything so better backup your data. But if you are a "true Google user", you will not lose anything when you either redo or lose the phone. WhatsApp backups automatically everyday into your Google drive, your photos are backed up to Google photos when using wifi(or mobile if you have the data), contacts are in your Gmail account, etc.

Good Luck!
