a tablet is portable than a laptop, but in terms of  functions and some other features they are the same, also a tablet does not play a cd/dvd ,but laptop does.

Yes tablets have their strong points compared to laptops. Generally they have a better battery life, lighter weight, and some have sim card slots for easy data access. Then there is also the hotspot feature in android tablets.Oh and camera, tablets have better cameras than all the laptops i have seen so far.
Bear in mind also that he can just buy a windows slate and run programs just as he would on a laptop. But if i were your friend however,i would buy a laptop first if i didnt have one.

Follow the link to read what your friendly neighbourhood Lenovo has to say. "With so many gadget choices on the market these days, it can be very difficult for consumers to decide where to sink their money. Laptops and tablets are wildly popular within different groups and demographics, mostly because they deliver specialized experiences to their users."

The only logical explanation I can have is that a tablet is for the adventure and out going guy while the laptop is for the office and indoor guy

It depends with the functions you use it for, interfaces you have: i.e. inputs and output( Do you use USBs, ethernet cables, do you want to print.) If you consider these few of many factors you will notice that without a wireless printer its not very easy to print or you may require more hardware making you equipment bulky. I would say go for laptop.

If you only use the for surfing the net. editing multimedia and documents. without much need to interface with basic office equipment like fax and printers then tablet goes on well. as well if you have to be mobile a lot capturing data laptop wont be the best.
