Why does the whatsapp icon change colours? Whats the significance?

I noticed that my whatsapp icon changes colour from green orange. What is the reason behind all this? What does it mean?

Usually orange means you are offline and green means you are online.Most of the apps that i usually use on my machine or mobile phone,for example Wampserver on a PC does the same trick.
