I am using zols 1mbps home package and i only get speeds of 100kbps which can vary every few minutes, its like the connection just drops and looses all its speed (down to 10-30kbps). I made a call to zol and asked if i was to upgrade to the 3mbps plan would i see a difference in speed and at first i was told yes. But yesterday when i tried to ask for a sample/test of a higher package the lady said i would not see a difference and that it would be better for me to move to a business package which starts at 115$ for 1mbps but is not shaped during business hours. What i want is speeds at least up to 250kbps even if its just at night. I am just not sure which path i should take?

I am in New Marlbrough, Red roofs. Have been using ZOL 1Mbps $59 package for a month. Im actually getting constant 3.5Mbps download and 1.7Mbps upload. So far im happy. I can watch videos on youtube uninterrupted any time any day. So i average 400 kBps at any given time.

Base station is 2KM from my house.  Maybe they will start throttling my speeds in the future but for now im pretty much happy with ZOL. There are periods yes when connection is lost completely, but these are short periods of 5 Minutes max, once a day. I suspect this is due to ZESA switching off and generator taking over.

i guess the shaping hasnt taken effect on you as yet or perhaps its base station based. i am in town, base station less than a km away in direct line of sight. i only get such speeds to zol servers on speedtest but in actual fact, international downloads peak at 1mbps. if i download heavy during the day, i am throttled down to 256k but realesed within the hour based on usage. i guess they still are to get to you so enjoy while you stilll can. used to experience those speeds too back in aug till sometime in late oct.

zol shapes heavy users downawards during business hours. the speeds you desire are NOLONGER achievabe on the 1mbps package. seems they have managed to implement their speed limits to the various packages. for speeds as much as 250kBps, you'd need to be on the 3mbps connection and yes you will get these speeds off peak, or on peak for a long as it is for verry small downloads. the business package is not shaped, ie to say yo can get 100kBps throughout the day for the 1mbps. thats the only advantage of business packages. you arent shaped and thus can download whatever, whenever.
