A hard drive's format isn't permanent so you can pretty much get whatever you want and format it on a mac

By the way, if your mac is relatively new, it will probably support USB 3. USB 3 drives offer great performance though Thunderbolt drives are arguably faster (some drives offer both interfaces but you may have to look far and wide for those)
