I downgraded windows. 8.1 to windows 7 about a month ago. (Core i5 with intel HD graphics 4000). It seems the processor utilisation is dow to 1% ost of the time, as opposed to 6-7% on win 8.1 . gpu usage is quite high though and has the fan whizzing at high apeed, even with aero off, and i can get only 3 hours on battery. Can we blame win7 and its heavy graphics or it's something else

low cpu usage is not because windows 8.1 is takes much resourses but it mostly because of bloatware(im guessing u bought your pc preinstalled with win8.1 and it had some pre installed programs.) more bloatware = more background processes = more cpu usage at any given time. Downgrading to windows 7 then removes the bloatware which results in less background processes = less cpu usage at any given time.. I don't think we can blame windows 7 for high gpu usage because the machine came preinstalled with win8.1 . It would be like blaming windows 8.1 for high gpu/cpu usage on a pc that came preinstalled with windows xp. What is the make and model of your machine

It's a Dell Vostro 3560, came with windows 8 preindtalled and i performed a clean install of windows 8.1 to rwmove bloatware....I found out it's indees windows 7 themes that make the GPU work really hard, i'm now using windows classic theme, both CPU and GPU usage are consistently at 1%, and battery life is now at a staggering 7 hours!

if your graphics card supports aero then its not about resources... Open task manager and check what is utilizing your resources
