Windows 7 soo slow!....

Question

l have Windows 7 professional machine which is very slow on network file transfer. During testing, l have realised that it seems like there is an internal bandwidth limit of 140MB/s.

here are the specs and tuning l tried:

-HP Z220 cmt workstation.

32G RAM;
l added more ram which is maximum thinking maybe buffering.

Chelsio 10G dual port ethernet card.
This is the main problem as l can only do transfers  jus above 1G, the switch is  Extreme 10G  switch with 48 ports.  The server lm transfering files to  is isilon with 100G backbone bandwidth.

l bought some 2 solid state disk and stripe them inside PC and still the transfer from ssd to hard disk is around 140MB/s

Should l conclude that Windows 7 is a waste of time in high data volume transfer environments?

sadly i do not have such hardware to do the tests for comparison, but i suggest you try a linux based OS with your set up, compare and conlude!

Linux is my choice bt this is company pc lm running test on. We have custom software which the programmer is not willing to port to Linux

motherboard issue?

could be either SATA drivers or MoBo drivers not enabling the SATA 6Gb/s speeds

best way to rule the drivers/sata out - is install a program that can setup a ramdisk and try writing a file from the net to the ram disk or from the ramdisk to the net - http://www.softperfect.com/products/ramdisk/

Thanks Anthony, l have already verified nic cards, check my fb. How do l enable 6g sata speeds? I was starting to suspect cpu in those lines.

Im very positive its the disk or something related. I used jperf which for network testing and l was able to clock 9.90Gbs on a 10Gbs nic. This program bypasses disk and use minimum cpu circles.

I will be testing this ramdisk today and l will hola you with results.

It did work but didnt give me the speed lm looking. Maybe because l have yet to master it properly. For a casually file transfer person l think its a viable solution. Im still gona use it because every little helps and maybe with time l can nail it.

After extensive testing, l have come to conclude that speed is being limited by the internal drive.

First of all try clearing cookies,browser history and cache,avoid running electronic devices at once,upgrade your modem or router to a newer model and have a periodic check in your modem ventilation, or do you use P2P (Peer to Peer) file sharing programs? If so then try turning the file sharing program off, as file sharing programs use up alot of bandwidth some broadband providers limit the speed you can use the internet if you are using file sharing programs.

If you turn off the file sharing program your broadband speed goes back to normal .

I faced the same problem ,after doing this i checked my speed from http://www.scanmyspeed.com apparently my internet speed is faster than before.
If these doesn't apply ,there is a chance you may have a virus on your computer. A computer virus is likely to not just slow your broadband and Internet down but your computer too.

If you find that not only is your broadband running slower but you notice that your computer is a bit more sluggish or notice that you have corrupt files or programs are not opening then you may well have a virus.Try to overcome this,your internet speed ll automatically rise up.
