I have given my unlocked O2 UK iPhone to my sister in-law in Zimbabwe. Does she have to jailbreak it to use it in zim?

No you can't...

There are two alternative routes:

1. Send the IMEI, serial, model and ICCID to the original carrier and they will factory unlock it for you, of course at a fee. UK operators are changing between £70 to £100.

2. You can jailbreak and pray that a compatible Gevy is released for the baseband on your phone. This will cost you about $100 locally, or you can buy the gevy online and part with only 60% of the local price...

There are local guys in Newlands who can do the process for you for $200. They will pay the original carrier for it to be unlocked on your behalf. Jailbreak should always be the last option.

$200 is a rip off. Jailbreaking is always a viable option, and it's legal too since 2010.

Let me explain the difference between Jailbreak and Unlock.Jailbreak and Unlock are two different terms but they are both usually confused.
Jailbreaking allows a user to install third party applications,software,themes and removes the limitations that are on the apple device.In short it gives the user the root access to iOS whereas Unlocking means the user can switch between network carriers.

In your case since it is an unlocked iPhone you will not have the need to unlock it to use a Zimbabwe sim.
