if there is no internet balance on your phone then whatsapp simply wont work, the only way i know of currently is to delete the app from your phone, then reinstall and re-verify when you need it again

there used to be a sign out function within whatsapp until mid last year. the developers then removed that function. now the only way to sign out of whatsapp is to delete your account without deleting the actual APP. iphones you go under settings - advanced settings - delete account. Android you go settings - account - delete my account
when you want to use again just add your number and connect. there will be no need to verify again as the system know your phone ID already

The best way is to get a second number and link it with your phone. A single phone can take up to 10 whatsapp numbers. Once you verify a number with your phone you will never be asked to do that again even if you delete and re-instal the actual APP. There is a function under settings-account to change your number. So you can alternate between numbers without deleting your APP and retaining your message history, only that your friends will not see you online until you log in again with the number they know. This save precious data bundles downloading whatsapp again and again

You can...
1.start communities and exit
2.open mail
a dialog box will appear which says too many applications open select to close one
3.close whatsapp
4.exit mail
5.now whatsapp is disabled till the next time you open it
cheers
