Maybe they have too many apps enabled by default which connects to the internet in the background without being initiated by the user.

plus, probably that particular model you have is running on older version of Android which means that almost every app installed already has a newer version , hence when u connect to the internet, the phone tries to update all those apps!....resulting in the money guzzling

You need to check your settings, every android phone "eats airtime" big time when it is new and you havent done your settings properly.
Go somewhere in your settings, (depending on which Android version you are using), look for Accounts and Sync, Disable that! Its the real culprit.
Also try to disable GPS. Some Android versions turn that on by default. If you do that you won't have a problem again. Trust me, I have done this on countless Android phones and versions, from Galaxy Pocket, Ace, G-Tel 707 Infinity, Galaxy S3... its the same story..
I have written a cool blog post on how to do it seamlessly here. Meet any troubles send me an e-mail.

as a solution you can install firewalls like Droidwall or AFwall+ to restricts apps from using your data without you knowing it

definately sounds like you got apps chewing up your data. you need to check your settings or get a watchdog to help you see what is chewing your MBs, the phones are fine. try Onavo count, My Data Manager. all available from gplay
