l updated my android note to android 4.2.1. It used to connect as mass storage on my PC but that has since been changed to MTP by Google. Now l cannt  have full access to my phone thru Ubuntu. l want to transfer large files to it and Bluetooth is non starter.

lm really trying my my best not to root it!

Just root the phone man! for a person like you, it shouldn't even be a choice. Also i'm sure you can mount an MTP device on Ubuntu.

The way its mounted is a bit dirty, l think l will have to root the thing

You would think google as the so called biggest supporter of open source they would have thought all this over before they change android OS.

lm glad to say there is no need need to root my phone as this issue have been sorted in new versions of Ubuntu. l was using the LTS 12.04 which only gets updated with security and critical updates.
